Road Safety and Traffic Calming
The Municipality of Central Elgin is committed to improving road safety for everyone who uses our roads, including drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users.
Speed management and traffic calming are ongoing priorities. Central Elgin regularly monitors traffic conditions, collects and analyzes traffic data, considers community feedback and reviews road criteria to help identify road safety concerns and determine where speed management and traffic calming measures may be appropriate.
Following a review of recent traffic calming initiatives, resident feedback, and direction from Central Elgin Council, the Municipality is launching a pilot traffic calming program in 2026.
The pilot program will introduce a variety of speed management and traffic calming measures at locations across Central Elgin. The goal is to encourage safer driving behaviours, help manage vehicle speeds, and improve road safety for all users.
Current Traffic Calming Measures
Radar Speed Signs and Traffic Counters
The Municipality uses three portable radar speed signs, which are rotated throughout Central Elgin. These signs provide drivers with real-time feedback on their speed and serve as a visual reminder to obey the posted speed limit.
Traffic counters are installed at select locations throughout the municipality to collect information on vehicle volumes and speeds. This data helps the Municipality monitor traffic patterns, identify areas of concern, and inform future traffic calming initiatives.

Pavement Markings – McBain Line
New pavement markings were installed on McBain Line in April to better define how the roadway is used, including designated travel lanes, on-street parking, and space for cyclists. The markings provide clearer guidance for all road users and help create a more predictable driving environment.
Clearly defined lane widths and the presence of on-street parking can also contribute to lower vehicle speeds by creating a more controlled roadway environment.
Lines painted on McBain Line Delineators – Carlow Road
Seven sets of temporary delineators have been installed along Carlow Road to help address speeding concerns and encourage safer travel speeds. Positioned along the road edge and centre line, the delineators help define the roadway, improve driver awareness, and serve as a visual reminder for motorists to travel within the posted speed limit.

Upcoming Traffic Calming Measures
Speed Humps
The Municipality will be installing speed humps at the following locations to encourage lower vehicle speeds and enhance safety for all road users:
- McBain Line (Lynhurst) – Three speed humps will be installed. Signage will accompany the speed humps to alert drivers. Combined with the new pavement markings, these measures are intended to create a more predictable and safer roadway environment.
- Crescent Avenue (Lynhurst) – One speed hump will be installed.
- Washburn Street (Belmont) – One speed hump will be installed.

Speed Bumps

Throughout the pilot program, the Municipality will monitor traffic conditions, review traffic data, and consider resident feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of the traffic calming measures.
Seasonal measures including speed bumps, speed humps and delineators will be removed before winter to accommodate snow removal and other winter maintenance operations and may be reinstalled in future seasons as the pilot program continues.
Road safety is a shared responsibility. Thank you for doing your part by following posted speed limits, staying alert, and helping keep Central Elgin's roads safe for everyone.
