The Municipality of Central Elgin is building a net zero fire station in Port Stanley, the first in Canada. The project has been approved for $3,745,100 in funding (grant and loan) through the Green Municipal Fund (GMF). The new Port Stanley Fire Station will be located at 4980 Sunset Drive (where East Street meets Sunset Drive) right as you enter town.

The new fire station will be a net zero facility measuring approximately 10,000 sq ft. Heating will be supplied by a geothermal system and hydro will be provided by solar panels that will be installed on carport structures in the parking lot. This is the first fire station in Canada that is completely identified as “net zero energy”. This building will be the new home for Central Elgin Fire Rescue's pumper, rescue and Arial platform.

    Site preparation for the Fire Station has been completed. Work will now begin on constructing the foundation of the building, this includes construction of the concrete footings and the geothermal design.

    On August 28, 2020 at 11am, Central Elgin held a groundbreaking ceremony to announce the new net zero fire station in Port Stanley, the first in Canada using low-carbon materials. The project has been approved for $3,745,100 in funding (grant and loan) through the Green Municipal Fund.

    Several representatives were in attendance to deliver congratulations and remarks including Joanne Vanderheyden, Second Vice-President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and Mayor of the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc; Sally Martyn, Mayor of the Municipality of Central Elgin; Kate Young, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages (FedDev Ontario), on behalf of the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; Chris McDonough, Director of Fire Rescue Services/Fire Chief; and Dave Mennill, Warden for the County of Elgin.

  • Preparation For The New Fire Hall Begins!

    Preparation for the new Port Stanley Fire Hall began the week of August 5, 2019. The Municipality commenced tree cutting on the site and would like to stress to the community that a biologist assessed the area beforehand to make sure that there were no sensitive species of trees or wildlife. It was determined that much of the vegetation was non-native and unfortunately, invasive. The existing non-native pines will be removed, however, we will ensure that the adjacent lands will be reforested and landscaped with native Carolinian trees and shrubs once construction is completed.
